Intensity and Frequency

Research tells us that students learn best with intensity and frequency. At Swan, we see children two or more days a week for one to two hours per session. As we teach conceptual skills, students’ learning is layered for more complexity.

Structured, Sequential, Cumulative

Our programs are focused on what YOUR student needs to reach their potential and unlock the joy of learning.

Our reading program introduces the elements of the language systematically. Students begin by reading and writing sounds in isolation and learning to visualize the phonemes. We go beyond memorization to a deep understanding. Students learn to blend sounds into syllables and words and understand the elements of language, e.g., consonants, vowels, digraphs, blends, and diphthongs. Writing, spelling, and reading are all taught together – reinforcing and connecting all the aspects of reading. All the while, they spiral their learning for fluency and automaticity.

At Swan, we build a conceptual framework for math by developing number sense and understanding of numbers and symbols. We teach students visual, conceptual, and numerical imagery integrated with language and applied to math computation and problem-solving. Our emphasis is on both mathematical reasoning and mathematical calculation. The focus is helping students derive meaning from numbers and use that understanding to mathematical problems.

Writing and Comprehension

We teach students to visualize their reading to build a strong comprehension framework. Students learn about the English language and study the many generalizations and rules that govern its structure. They also know how to understand and apply the language knowledge necessary to achieve reading and writing competencies. Students learn the structural elements such as syllable types, roots, and affixes. As students learn new material, they continue to review old material to the level of automaticity. At Swan, we address vocabulary, sentence structure, composition, and reading comprehension to build a solid foundation for learning. We emphasize gaining meaning from what students read and a method for showing what they know through writing.

The Joy of Learning

At Swan, we know that children need to be children — to play and have fun. We work hard and give students plenty of breaks and time to rest their brains from the intense and rewarding learning. Students earn points each session and use those points at our Swan store or to order a creation from our 3-D print Lab.
